MUV is happy to virtually join the Urban Mobility Days 2020, the European Commission’s first large-scale digital event on sustainable urban mobility, taking place online from 29 September to 2 October.

The Urban Mobility Days, hosted by the European Commission, combines two leading events from Europe’s transport calendar: the CIVITAS Forum Conference and the European Conference on Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs). This year’s event will be on the theme of “zero-emission mobility for all“, a title which is in line with the objectives of the European Green Deal and the theme of European Mobility Week taking place a week before.

Considering the extraordinary global health situation, the conference will take place online and topics of the conference and plenary sessions will reflect key aspects related to planning and innovation of urban mobility in times of crisis.

The conference will also go beyond transport by connecting zero-emission mobility initiatives with broader EU efforts to tackle climate change and make Europe a carbon-neutral continent by 2050. Conference activities will also address the resilience of urban mobility in unforeseen circumstances, and take stock of lessons learned to date during the COVID-19 pandemic.

We can’t wait to join. See you next week!

The programme is available here: http://www.eumd.org/

Dear Community, the MUV Research Project expired on May 30th.

This is our last news after a 3-year journey together.

From 2017 to 2020, PUSH guided a consortium of 14 partners from 8 different countries in Europe in a research project aimed to change commuting habits through a game that mixes digital and physical experiences.

We would like to thank all of the MUVers who have done during these years an incredible job.

We inform you that we will permanently delete your personal data (name, surname and email) by the end of July.

Rounding out the final dissemination, we invite you to visit the MUVigator, the how-to Guide to promote a safe and sustainable urban mobility for communities all over the world.

Our efforts to try to promote new more sustainable and healthy habits are ongoing… We are thrilled to officially announce that MUV Research Project has become a benefit corporation to push further MUV’s sustainable change!

Last week, MUV pilot activities in Amsterdam came to a close as they held their final local event: Participation in Practice. The event provided the opportunity to present MUV’s achievements; consider insights and recommendations surrounding citizen participation; and hear introductions from other projects and initiatives that will continue to develop citizen participation, citizen science, and commons approaches to data and mobility in Amsterdam.

You can find the project’s greatest hits in the MUV Amsterdam brochure. It contains:

  • An overview of the communities in Amsterdam who were involved in MUV and their efforts
  • Links to webinars, github, and other resources for DIY learning
  • Recommendations from citizens and the pilot team on participation, citizen sensing, and the future of mobility data in Amsterdam
  • Info about where to find current and future related local initiatives

Last Sunday the final of the MUV Sustainable City Cup, the competition involving 21 cities in the world, was played.

About 400 players challenged each other during 5 weeks and the city of Ghent, lead by its legendary MUVer Christof V., won the Cup!

The Belgian team defeated an indomitable team Rome (even during the covid-19 Italian emergency…) in the final match with a new record of 115.429 points!

Bronze medal went to San Donà di Piave (Italy) that, by defeating Milan (4th – Italy), the former Champion, is definitely the revelation of this Sustainable City Cup edition.

In fifth and sixth place we find Palermo (Italy) and Teresina (Brazil), then Barcelona (7th – Spain) and the new Associate City Chieri (8th – Italy). In the ninth position another new Associate City, Codlea from Romania, followed by Cagliari (10th – Italy), Fundão (11th – Portugal) and Catania (12th – Italy). Munich’s last victory against Helsinki (14th – Finland) brought Bavarians to 13th position, Katowice (Poland) and Ostende (Belgium) close the best 16 chart. The last five cities (which didn’t make it to the playoffs) are: Gliwice (Poland), Amsterdam (Netherlands), Šabac (Serbia), Sosnowiec (Poland) and Arrecife (Spain).

As happened last time (and even more this time!) the victory nevertheless belongs to everyone: MUVers changed their routinary trips (home-work and others), achieving an average decrease of 38% of the individual CO2 emissions.

Here some figures about the whole experience we run so far:

  • Registered MUVers: 4.979
  • Recorded trips: 70.591
  • Walking trips: 41.529
  • Biking trips: 19.493
  • Public Transport trips: 9.569
  • Sustainable Kilometres : 261.887,82
  • Cities issues feedback: 150
  • MUV app feedback: 444

In coherence with the MUV objectives, all the mobility data collected belong to the same communities that produced them and will be used to trigger further participatory processes and contribute to the identification of new measures to improve sustainable mobility and make cities more liveable.

Now that the challenge is over, it’s time for prizes: the winning team Ghent is ready to move to Rome in October for the Maker Faire, global sponsor of the Cup: the 3 best best-players win a sustainable trip to Rome, a night in a Hotel and and tickets for the Faire, all the other best players of the remaining 19 teams get free tickets to join over 100.000 innovation enthusiasts and glimpse the future.

new Tournament is about to start in a few days: thanks to our U-mob friends, more than 20 universities from all over Europe will fight each other to find out who’s the most sustainable!

Moreover, thanks to MUVer’s sharp feedback and insights, new exciting updates are about to be launched…Stay tuned!!

Facing the final phase of the research project, a lot of activity is going on in our pilot cities.

As citizens in the different cities used the MUV-app, they were registering their sustainable mobility routes. Also, the data from the sensors in the MUV monitorings stations are available. Now, this data will be used during Hackathons in our different pilot cities.

Barcelona, Palermo, Amsterdam & Ghent are organising events with the public that will uplift the collected data of the MUV-project.

On March 21st & 22nd, The Barcelona Municipality & I2cat organize the Sustainable Mobility Hackathon. Teams will be requested to define and build a software application (web based or app) that can be a possible answer to the initially raised challenges.

Apps for Ghent organises their 10th edition of the Hackathon on March 20th & 21st. The theme is Mobility and MUV will be present with a challenge and, of course, their dataset. This data can be combined with other open datasets regarding mobility in Ghent. The perfect opportunity to get creative with data or to be inspired to create new apps.

The Amsterdam Municipality and Waag are hosting a 2-night ‘Participation Station’ in Amsterdam. During the first night, citizens will place themselves in the role of neighborhood mobility manager – considering what issues are of concern in their own community, and how a public administrator ought to go about addressing them. The second night of the event is dedicated to developing concrete recommendations from citizens about their participation in forthcoming municipal mobility efforts.

In Palermo, Push organises in collaboration with Python Meetup Palermo, the 1st edition of Datathon on March 7th & 8th. The event aims to involve developers, data scientists, designers and anyone who is ready to take on the challenge of imagining new solutions and mobility services for our city.

Update March 12th: due to measures regarding the corona virus outbreak, the dates of the hackathons are subject to change.

The third edition of the International Tournament among cities on sustainable mobility started on January 27th. Twenty-one cities are competing in this edition.

Amsterdam, Barcelona, Fundao, Ghent, Helsinki, Palermo, Rome, Teresina, Cagliari, Gliwice, Katowice, Munich, Milan, Ostend, Sabac, Sosnowiec Arrecife, Codlea, San Donà di Piave, Chieri and Catania. All cities are very different from each other. But all the MUVers in these cities are contributing towards changing their mobility habits. They downloaded the app ‘MUV’ and are turning their mobility behavior into a sport.

At the end of the Tournament, the best team and the most valuable sustainable mobility “athletes” will be rewarded with local prizes and discounts. The 3 best players of the winning team will be hosted to the Maker Fair in Rome, our partner in this Tournament. Maker Faire Rome is an event designed to turn the spotlight on hundreds of projects from around the world that are able to catapult visitors into the future.

The Tournament ends on March 2nd. We are excited to find out which city will win the competition. But most of all, to see the impact on mobility habits of the MUVers and how many tons of CO2 emissions will be saved. During the previous edition of the Sustainable City Tournament, approximately 180,000 sustainable km were recorded by the MUV app.

We have a champion!

Yesterday was the end of the II MUV Sustainable City Tournament, the mobility challenge that involved in this edition sixteen cities in the world.

The matches, exciting from the first one to the last one, immediately showed the competitiveness of the teams.

All the citizens who use the MUV app recorded their trips around the city walking, biking or using public transports.

About 500 players were active in the game and the strongest were the citizens of Milano. The Milanese team defeated, in fact, Palermo in the final match reaching the record of about 90,000 points in only one week

Sustainable City Tournament_Milan

But until the last hours, this victory was not so obvious. During most of the week, the score of the two cities differed only for a bunch of points.

Let’s have a look at the other teams!

A brilliant Barcelona completes the podium in its third place, while in the fourth and fifth places we find two MUV Associate Cities: the Polish Katowice, followed by Teresina (Brazil) who for a few thousand points is above Ghent (Belgium).

Then we have Munich (Germany) in the seventh place, Rome in the eighth, Sosnowiec (Poland) is ninth and the last of the Italian teams involved, Cagliari, just tenth.

In the final places of the rankings, we find Ostend (Belgium), Amsterdam, Fundao (Portugal), Helsinki, Gliwice (Poland) and Šabac (Serbia).

Sustainable City Tournament Sustainable City Tournament

The victory belongs to everyone

As happened last time the victory nevertheless belongs to everyone. The game has, in fact, contributed to changing the individual mobility habits of active users on their routinary routes (home-work and others). Participants recorded an average decrease of 32.4% of the individual CO2 emissions!

A tribute goes to all the citizens who in recent months have covered the approximately 180,000 sustainable km. If they had been run by a car, would have released into the atmosphere about 27 tons of CO2.

All the mobility data collected belong to the same communities that produced them. They will be used to trigger further participatory processes and contribute to the identification of new measures to improve sustainable mobility and make cities more liveable.

Once the challenge is over, it’s time for prizes

The winning team Milan is ready to get a graffiti made with the anti-pollution paint Airlite, global sponsor of the challenge.

A local artist will be selected ad hoc for this and, together with citizens, will create a street artwork on a city wall. Airlite also awards the best athletes who have distinguished themselves for the sustainability of their choices with a free supply of the paint for their apartments.

The best of all the other European cities involved will be invited to buy the product with a discount of 25%.

We are planning a new edition of the MUV Sustainable City Tournament for January 2020.

All the interesting cities/organizations have time until December 15th to apply and to participate through the form on the project website.

We are very happy to announce that Airlite, the innovative air purification technology that is applied on every type of surface just like a normal paint, is officially our global sponsor for the second ongoing MUV Sustainable City Tournament.

Airlite is a revolutionary technology that transforms indoor walls (of houses, offices, schools, etc.) and outdoor walls (of buildings and public walls) into natural air purifiers powered by solar energy. Its use has many benefits: it neutralizes odours, eliminates 99.9% of bacteria, eliminates and prevents mold, repels dust and dirt, reduces air pollution by up to 88.8% and energy costs by up to 50%. You can currently invest in Airlite on MamaCrowd platform and contribute to its growth.

A few figures to perfectly visualize its benefits: one square meter covered by Airlite eliminates 0.069 g of nitrogen oxides every 12 hours. Therefore, 1000 metres of Airlite eliminate in 12 hours the pollution produced by 71.88 petrol cars or 23 diesel cars Euro 4, or 95.83 petrol cars or 31.94 diesel cars Euro 5. If we try to measure the phenomenon with trees we could say that thanks to Airlite almost 200.000 m2 of forest were planted.

It is definitely the perfect sponsor of our Sustainable City Tournament. Isn’it?

So who will win Airlite and how? The winning city of the Tournament, which will end on December 8, will be awarded with the free supply for a mural that will be created by a local artist selected through an Open Call. The top three MUVers in the winning city will get a free supply of Airlite for their home walls, while the top three in all the other EU cities participating in the Tournament will be rewarded with a 25% discount on the purchase of the product.

But that’s not the end of the story: Airlite intends in fact to reward all those MUVers in Europe who are committed to more sustainable daily mobility habits and not just those involved in the competition. In the next few days, a Special Training will be launched to reward those who reduce CO2 emissions resulting from routinary trips.

At the end of the first edition of the Sustainable City Tournament (July 2019) we measured a reduction of almost 2 tons of CO2 emissions: what can MUVers achieve in this Tournament and using Airlite in their cities and houses? We’re looking forward to find it out!

From October 2th to 4th, in the city of Graz (Austria), hundreds of policymakers, city representatives, researchers and practitioners gathered to attend the CIVITAS Forum Conference 2019.

This year’s topic was “Back to the Future” and reveals how intelligently combining advanced technology, people-centric planning, and pedestrian and pedal power is the engine to achieve clean, connected and safe mobility for all. Graz is a leading example to witness this.

Some representative of MUV consortium were present in Graz and contributed to the overall exchange of knowledge.

Karen Soens (MUV Communication manager) talked about gatekeepers & communication design during the session “Inclusive community engagement at the neighbourhood level”, organized together with the “sister projects” funded under the H2020-MG-4.5-2016 call (Cities4People, Metamorphosis, Sunrise).

Salvatore Di Dio (MUV Coordinator) was invited to share some relevant MUV learnings during a workshop organized by the consortium of the Interreg SaMBA project, where he talked about how to encourage citizens to change their behaviours through gamification & how policy makers can gain a better understanding of the user perspective.

Lastly, during the Forum the second international Open Call was launched. Now is the time, to become an urban mobility game-changer! If you want to join the MUVement, you can apply until December 15th.

And here we are with a new chance the MUV consortium offers to more cities to join the MUVement: the second Open Call, launched today during the CIVITAS Forum 2019 in Graz (Austria).

As the pilot experimentation enters the next, crucial and final phase, it’s time to engage new communities to enrich the MUV approach with fresh perspectives, unforeseen problems and unexpected creativities.

Who are we looking for? New Associate Cities willing to play the “Sustainable City Tournament” together with the 16 cities already involved or Associate Partners interested in organizing dedicated Tournaments (i.e. among neighbourhoods in one city, among different departments in your organization, etc).

MUV levers behavioural change in local communities using an innovative approach to improve urban mobility: enhancing citizens’ sustainable and healthy mobility habits through a game that mixes digital and physical experiences and gathers data. This data helps policymakers to enhance planning processes and civic hackers to build new services to improve local quality of life in a more effective way.

With MUV, Cities can engage in a positive way with citizens, local businesses, policymakers and Open Data enthusiasts. The MUV app and its game dynamics have been co-created with strong learning communities of users and stakeholders across EU over the last 2 years and a half.

The Open Call is open to citizen groups, local business organizations, city governments, universities, research centres and NGOs in all kind of neighbourhoods (rural and urban, sparse and populous, low-tech or smart).

Interested? Complete the online form. A MUV partner will contact you shortly to guide you through the application process.

Join the MUV network of innovating cities, set up a MUVerhood and become an urban mobility game-changer!

Deadline for submissions: 15th December 2019.
