The Vuurtorenwijk (Opex) has a rich and long history: from a marshy natural landscape to a fishing village to an industrial port area and ultimately to a mix of functions. The Vuurtorenwijk is a quite dense neighbourhood with 2.850 households (6.132 inh.). The area is partly surrounded by water and accessible by the four-lane road Dr. E. Moreauxlaan, which cuts both pieces of the neighbourhood in two.
With an extra 3.000 extra housing units (till 2020) on the East Bank, the neighborhood is in full expansion. This shift and new dynamic poses some challenges in terms of mobility, quality of life, old versus new residents but especially matching the different functions on the East Bank: fishing activities, housing and industry.
