The subject site is the very city center of Šabac, an area that encompasses the main pedestrian street, the main square, the market, museum, library, theater, 6 schools, and the city park – the most prominent green area in the city. It is the historical city center, with the biggest concentration of shops, cafes, restaurants and small businesses. This means increased vehicular and pedestrian traffic and parking needs, and the conflicts and security risks that come from their contact.
Although bicycles were once widely used as mean of transportation in the city, in the 1990ies and 2000s the urban mobility image of the city has shifted towards increased automobile use. Recent projects have been aimed at making the city center more walkable, however, these changes need to be supported by behavioral change.
